Georgetown wins Big East title

The Hoyas beat Pittsburgh last night 65-42, and it was every bit the beat-down it seems. Here is the CNN/SI article about it.
I, for one, am really excited about the conference championship. I’ve read and heard sports journalists say that the conference is less important than going far in the NCAA tournament, which is true; the corollary that it is therefore not important at all is not true, though. How many teams can hang a banner on their rafters? I’m irritated by the emphasis on only one standard of excellence, winning the whole thing; all-or-nothing can’t be good for the sport. I’m not going to have a Bobby Knight-ish rant here, but the game is better when people care about the incremental accomplishments more. Not that the players, coaches, and many fans don’t, but with the media conglomeration that is ESPN/Sports Illustrated/Gatorade being the arbiter of success more and more, the local joy of being conference champs can be lost. This Washington Post article sums up the happiness of this accomplishment, which is lost if you follow sports only through the national outlets.
I’m not slamming the national sports media, but I hope that fans realize that not winning the national championship, or having a down year or two, is not yet reason to call for blood. I’m going to take my own advice and try and get over the Bear’s loss in the Superbowl.

Hear, Hear! Winning the Big East tournie is a big deal for G’town… 18 years in the making, not to mention three great years of development by JT III.
I’d also like to add that journalists who say the conference is not important at all are idiots, because obviously winning the conference locked in G’town getting a No.2 seed in the Dance.
There’s been talk of Georgetown making it to the Final Four (or in the words of Kennerson, “GEORGETOWN ALL THE WAY!!!”). And that would be great to see. For now, I’m also happy about the Big East win.
