Georgetown advances to the Final Four. Elsewhere in the same country, the UChicago basketball team goes 20-6 and makes it to the Div III tournament

This past Sunday, the Georgetown men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 1985. The game was downright amazing, as anyone who watched will attest. The Hoyas were down by TEN points with seven minutes to go, and still came back to tie in regulation and, ultimately, win in overtime. As a commenter on Fark.com put it, UNC only brought 38 minutes worth of basketball to a 45 minute game. Georgetown never panicked, and that was exciting to see; with the win, it was also edifying.
This isn’t the first time I’ve attended a school with basketball success; my senior year in collge, the University of Chicago went to the Division III men’s basketball tounament, and made it to the Sweet 16. It being Division III, it was more like the semi-sweet 16, but hey, it was fun. The best part was the UChicago mascot; it was ostensibly a phoenix, but looked more like a giant rooster. We called it the “War Chicken.,” and it was drunk most of the time. It’s kind of like the Stanford Tree, but with without any of the mythology. It turns out that this year the men’s basketball team also made it to the Div III NCAA tournament before being knocked out by Hope College 76-54 on March 2nd.
Despite the loss in the tourney, they had a great season, winning the UAA conference championship and going 20-6. Is it sad that I care about UChicago sports? Probably, but it wouldn’t even be the most nerdy interest I’ve ever had. Anyway, I’m proud of both Georgetown and UChicago for making to their tourneys. It’s interesting for me to feel that way, because for the most part people who go to school that are not big sports schools have a limited list of reactions. Those reactions are:
1) They hate sports.
2) They love sports and wish they went to a sports school.
3) They love sports but rationalize why big time college sports are corrupt/evil/demonic.
4) They are ambivalent to sports, yet are glad they went to a school without a big sports program.
Is anyone else out there from a school with no big sports teams? How do you feel about college sports?

i didn’t go to a big sports school, but i saw the euphoria of victory once or twice… dartmouth could always be counted on to lose to us, as would columbia. (football)
the women’s ice hockey team, however, rocked. sadly, tho, those days are gone.

I went to UCSD, which was for a long time Division III, but then became Div II while I was there. We did not have a football team, spawning great t-shirts with the slogan “UCSD Football… Still Undefeated!”
I was of the category of loving sports and wishing I went to a big sports school. So now I’m officially a Hoya. G’town all the way!

Well, Georgetown lost to Ohio State, but unless Green and Hibbert jump to the NBA, we’ll have a TON of seniors next year.
