R.I.P. Kurt Vonnegut

By Mark | April 12, 2007

Kurt VonnegutI can’t post anything better than Barzelay.net did here, but I feel like I should post something.

Kurt Vonnegut wrote several books that have broken my heart over and over. He attended the University of Chicago, which is probably the least notable aspect of his life that I could mention, but I do it simply as a loyal alumnus. His obituar is the L.A. Times, and elsewhere. I’d post the obituary from the New York Times, as it was excellent, but it will just expire in a few days (much like the man himself, I guess), so I’ll just quote a line from God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater and hope that it will be sufficient:

“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’”

God speed, Mr. Vonnegut.

UPDATE: Boing-boing has a list of Eight Rules for Writing Short Stories by Vonnegut. Excellent.

Thanks, kid. I appreciate the compliment (and complement) that your post gives mine.

Oh, and when your column in the Law Weekly ends, will you become a regular blogger, with like… links and stuff?

A regular blogger? The only things I do regularly are gastrointestinal.

That said, I do hope to blog a bunch more, with links and stuff.
