Good news and bad news.
By Mark | September 24, 2007
Today was an inauspicious day for two reasons and an auspicious one for two other reasons. First, the bad news.
Bad News #1: The Bears lost to the Dallas Cowboys, 34-10. I was watching this game with various loved ones, and I hate to admit that I said the “F” word in front of my father, but I did. By way of explanation, I’ll just say that I was watching Rex Grossman throw his second interception of the day. Second of three. He has less yards for the year (305) than Tony Romo threw today.
Bad News #2: Rep. David Vitter (R-LA) snuck in $100,000 in funding for anti-evolution efforts into the labor, health and education financing bill for 2008. I have no problem with people believing in a non-materialistic explaination for life’s diversity, even if I happen to find that viewpoint ludicrous. I DO have a problem, though, with a bill designed to teach a viewpoint that is held by no reputable scientist working in the field. Our students have enough hurdles learning the science in which we DO have consensus; now we’re spending money to teach them junk, simplistic theology mascarading as science? I wrote about my views on evolution and creationism previously. I hope it’s enough to say that I now dislike David Vitter even more than previously.
Good News #1: The Cubs won today against Pittsburgh 8-0 in Wrigley Field, on one of the nicest days imaginable. Chicago in the autumn is like a brick on the edge of a table over your foot; you know it’s going to fall at some point, so you try and enjoy the time until it does as much as possible. That analogy is awkward, but cut me some slack: it’s 2am. The Brewers also blew a lead against the Braves, which means that the Cubs are up 3.5 games over Milwaukee with a week of baseball left to play.
Good News #2: Tom Finley’s dog Reba has been reunited with him. Finley is a panhandler in the Loop who has been looking for his companion of the last 12 years frantically for the last few weeks. I’ve used the term “heartbreaker” before (often in reference to the Cubs, see Good News #1, above), but this story really was one. If you can imagine losing your mainstay and best friend, who was often the friendliest face around when you’re living on the street (Finley has an apartment now), then you can imagine what this guy went through. I don’t approve of human interest stories taking up the front page of a newspaper (even in .com form), but I have no complaints this time. Good luck to Mr. Finley, and to Reba.

Although Grossman has been benched, I hope fans realize that the O-Line hasn’t been blocking well at all. Benson hasn’t been picking up blitzes very well and the O-Line is missing blocking assignments. It will help if Griese can get some passing game going so there isn’t 8 (or even 9!) dudes in the box.
I have 2 nicknames for Griese ready based on his performance this Sunday: GrieseLightning if he does good, GrieseStain if he does bad.
Now on to the Cubs:
They have just dropped 2 to the Marlins. I refuse to feel good until the regular season is over. :)

I’ll say this for the sports fans in Chicago right now: we’re not bored.
